FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which is the oldest known system of health care in the world.  Acupuncture increases the body’s ability to heal by the stimulation of different sites on the body with a very fine sterile needle.  The results include specific and measurable chemical, electrical, and functional changes.  For the patient, that response produces decreasing symptoms that last for increasingly longer amounts of time.

It is virtually painless! Very fine surgical stainless steel needles are used and because of their small size and the fact they are solid, they can be inserted with very little discomfort.  In fact, acupuncture is very relaxing, and some patients may even fall asleep during their treatments.

Acupuncture is a very safe procedure when done by experienced, well trained practitioners using sterile disposable needles.  Over the last 16 years, Dr. Hunstad has performed over 36,000 patient visits without a single adverse event.  Your safety and comfort are our highest priority.  In our practice we use only high quality single-use, disposable needles and use universal precautions to ensure you are being given the best care possible.

During your first visit, a brief consultation will be done to determine if acupuncture is appropriate for your health concerns.  If so, an examination will be done and an initial treatment plan will be developed which will include a trial of acupuncture to see how you respond to the treatment.  If acupuncture is not appropriate for your health concern, you will be referred to the appropriate medical specialist.  Once the initial acupuncture trial is completed and your rate of response is determined, a formal treatment plan will be developed.

Every case is different, but in general, the first visit will take an hour, and follow up visits will take 30-60 minutes.

We are in-network providers for Tri-West and Veterans Administration Community Care Plan.  If you are a veteran, we encourage you to contact the VA for a doctors authorization for acupuncture treatment.  At this time we do not accept any other health insurance plans.  However, if you have acupuncture benefits through your plan, we can provide you with the necessary forms for you to submit to your insurance company and they will reimburse you directly.
